Factory owners usually sought a location near a waterway or an ocean to more easily ship products and to import raw materials to create products. Ports and rivers were normally more populated than the countryside to begin with. As these factories expanded their production, it attracted people from various farming areas to the cities where they could earn wages that were in many cases higher than their pay on farms. The workers enlarged the population of manufacturing cities.
The industrial revolution that began in England in the 18th century favored places such as cities that were near water, and or ocean ports. Farm people who wanted a fresh start as factory workers came to these cities and the result was the growth in population of such places as Liverpool. This city as an example was on the coastline and also had the benefit of being on the Mersey River.
