Before the Protestant Reformation all Europe used one religion, Roman Catholicism. It depended on its hierarchy.

Protestantism under Luther had three emphasis: only grace, only faith, and only scripture. In order to have scripture, people needed to be literate. Scripture replaced much of the authority of the hierarchy.

Protestantism brought in an emphasis on republican government in all protestant areas except Germany.

Calvinism emphasized self reliance.

So Europe divided into the hard working Protestant north and the less prosperous south.
