They initially fought for more land to support an expanding population. Their succes gained them allies, who encouraged them to intervene in other disputes. This kept them expanding, and their military success and knack of governing and controlling others kept them expanding. They had losses, but these were outweighed by their successes.

Good at fighting, good at organising war alliances, good at governing the defeated.
