There was no one religion and the Romans were pretty tolerant. Rome had many people from many places. There were temples in the forum for the gods and goddesses of Rome. There were the women who were the Vestal priestess of Rome who tended the sacred fire of Vesta. The Cult of Mithra was popular among Roman soldiers and Mithraism had tied to Christianity. The Romans were tolerant of all religions as long as they didn't have disruptive or revolutionary aspirations. They recognised that different gods were the same, just with different names. When Pompey conquered Jerusalem, he went up to the temple and sacrificed to the high god, recognising Jehovah as Jupiter/Zeus. However they came down heavily on cults which promoted revolution.. Christianity fell under suspicion as the early adherents met in private houses, not in open at temples. Such meetings were often a sign of secret plots, and they reacted accordingly.
