During the American Civil War, the Eastern Theater's military operations took place mainly in and around Virginia and Maryland. The main Union army stationed in this theater was known as the Army of the Potomac. Other Union armies were the Army of Virginia, the Army of the Cumberland, and Army of the Tennessee.

The Northern section of the United States called themselves the Union. They were commonly called the Yanks or Yankees. They could of also of been referred to as the Blue Bellies because of the color of their uniforms.

The major Northern armies, or more properly said, the Union armies of the US Civil War were named after rivers. The following armies are the ones that were significant and were involved in major campaigns:1. Army of the Potomac;

2. Army of the Ohio;

3. Army of the Cumberland;

4. Army of the Tennessee;

5. Army of Virgina; and

6. Army of the James.


By the same token, US Civil War battles were named after bodies of water such as Bull Run, a stream, while the South called the same battle Manassas.

Southern armies and battles were named after territory or states and towns. For example, the prestige Southern Army of Northern Virginia, was named after Virginia. The Battles of Bull Run were named after the town nearby, namely Manassas.On the Union side, armies were named after bodies of water. Their prestige army was the Army of the Potomac. And, what the South called the battles of Manassas, was termed by the Union as the battles of Bull Run. Bull Run being a stream were the two major Civil War battles took place.
