When the Spanish-American War ended, US troops occupied Manila in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The United States emerged from the war, not only a military power in world affairs, but a nation that would play a large role in the economic affairs of the world. Our industries were constantly looking for new markets and for raw materials. To protect our interests abroad, our navy was looking for coaling stations in strategic areas of the world. The power of the purse and the military future of the United States gave us new respect among the other nations of the world.
