The Totonacas Indians were a tribe that were unhappy subjects of the Aztec Empire under Tenochtitlan. They attempted to go with the Spaniards, and recruit other subject people to join them in the overthrow of the Aztecs. However, when the group came to the Tlaxcan territory, 30,000 of them attacked the Spanish group. However, their fight against an obviously more numerous army impressed the chief who offered them hospitality. The Spaniards also had to fight the Tabasco tribe, but after making peace, Cortes was given an Indian princess, who was Aztec, her translation and information on the Aztec Kingdom was helpful in the Spanish overthrowing the empire.
