The U.S. obtained Puerto Rico and Guam as a result of the Spanish American war. It then purchased the Philippians for $20 million. The Philippians were granted independence on July 4 (Independence Day) 1947.
Hawaii and Alaska both became states in 1959. Hawaii was annexed by the U.S. at the request of American sugar plantation owners. Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million. First gold and later oil were discovered in Alaska, so it has more than paid for itself many times over.
