The US didn't stop the cold war. Various groups have various reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union into separate countries. Since it really wasn't a war (no combat), the methods to fight it were "one upmanship." They would build a new super dooper jet; the US would build a better one. They'd build a new super powered nuclear sub, the US would build a better one. They would put their Sputnik into space, the US would put a man on the moon. The cold war was an "arm's race."
