Both Germany & Japan were "rebuilt" to support the US/NATO Forces for the cold war; Japan was rebuilt to support the war effort during the Korean War (1950-1953). As well as assembly lines to build NEW military vehicles, etc. In essence: Germany became the BASE for Free World operations in Europe during the cold war; and Japan became the BASE for Free World operations in Asia/Pacific during the cold war.
The United States occupied Japan at the conclusion of the war, and implemented programs to restore the economic viability of the country. This was ultimately successful in establishing a renewed industrial capacity and high employment levels.
After Japan's surrender at the end of World War II, Japanese territorial gains were rescinded; as a result, Japan lost Manchuria and Korea. The United States established military bases on the islands until 1972. Japan was intended to be deindustrialised to prevent another war but this was much lesser than the German deindustrialisation
