According to the First Book of Kings, Solomon demonstrated no political wisdom, nor even sufficient common sense to govern wisely in the interests of his own son's succession to the throne of the United Monarchy. His ambitions led him to raise swingeing taxes, which his son and successor, Rehoboam, refused to lift: (The Complete Jewish Bible 1 Kings 12:4: "Your father made our yoke hard. Now you lighten your father's hard work and his heavy yoke which he placed upon us, and we shall serve you.")

As a result, the Israelites broke away from the kingdom of Israel, forming the northern kingdom, also known as Israel, leaving Rehoboam with the small enclave of Judah. Many modern scholars doubt this story and say that there never really was a United Monarchy of Israel under kings David and Solomon. They say that Israel and Judah were always separate, with their own customs and even different dialects of the Hebrew language.

Jewish Answer

Under King Solomon, there were twelve different states under the control of each tribe, each state had its own leaders, including its own king from the tribe of Judah, and maintained independent legal systems. After Solomon's death, the tribes divided into two different kingdoms, one made up of Judah and Benjamin, the other made up of the other 10 tribes. It wasn't the actions of Solomon that caused this, unless you wish to call his death an action.

King Solomon didn't have any effect on it. It was the Roman Empire.

ANSWER:

It was NEITHER King Solomon or the Roman Empire which wasn't in Israel in the 10th Century BC. It was Solomon's 2 sons, Rehoboam and Jeroboam that divided the House of Israel into the Northern Kingdom (10 tribes) called Samaria, and the Southern Kingdom (2 tribes primarily) called Judah.

This split was against God's desires and remains today with the 10 tribes 'lost' to history after the Assyrian invasion of 721-718 BC. There are prophecies for the 'end-time' or latter days that show how God will re-unite all Israel forever.
