The were two conflicts for the control of the interior of South Africa.

The first one was caused by the British annexation of Transvaal, which led to the Boers' revolt and the outbreak of a war that lasted from 1880 through 1881.

The Boers managed to repulse the British efforts to subdue them and Great Britain acknowledged the South African republic on April 5, 1881.

The second one was caused by the discovery of gold in Transvaal and broke out on Oct.12, 1899.

The Boers were decisively defeated by July 4,1900 but carried on a guerrilla warfare which lasted until 1902, when, realizing any further resistance would be useless, they signed the Treaty of Vereeniging on May 31, 1902, which put to an end the war.

The Boers' States became a part of British South Africa.
