What were the ships like that the early explorers used?

Early explorers primarily used ships like caravels and galleons, which were designed for long sea voyages. Caravels were smaller, agile vessels with lateen sails that allowed for better navigation along coastlines and into shallow waters. Galleons, larger and more robust, were equipped for cargo and warfare, featuring multiple decks and square sails. These ships were often built from sturdy wood and designed to withstand the challenges of the open ocean, enabling explorers to venture into uncharted territories.

How were caravels better than what they replaced?

Caravels were superior to earlier ships, such as galleons and cogs, due to their lighter and more maneuverable design, which allowed for faster sailing and better navigation in coastal waters and rivers. Their lateen sails enabled them to sail against the wind more effectively, enhancing their ability to explore and trade. Additionally, caravels had a shallower draft, making them adept at operating in shallow waters, which was crucial for exploration along uncharted coastlines. This combination of speed, agility, and versatility made caravels a preferred choice for explorers during the Age of Discovery.
