In Japan: it ended with the US dropping the atomic bomb over Hiroshima on August 9 1945.
In Europe: it ended with US pushing into Germany. The Soviets surrounded Berlin and seiged the city. Hitler commited suicide. Berlin was captured by the Soviet Union the next day.

It was the end of WW2 in Europe. Without wanting to diminish what had gone on in the far east, this was the greatest conflict in history and its ending made a difference to a great many people.
