1The assassination in itself didn't really cause World War I. It merely triggered it. Europe had been close to war for ages for a variety of reasons that I won't go into right now.

Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy were all allied. This meant that if any one of them got attacked, the other two would pitch in and help as well. This was called the Triple Alliance. Britain, France and Russia did the same thing. This was called the Triple Entente.

At the time, Bosnia was part of the Austria-Hungarian empire. However, some Bosnians didn't like this and wanted to join up with their neighbours Serbia instead. Serbia also wanted to join up with Bosnia. So, when the heir to the Austrian throne, Franz Ferdinand, got assassinated in Sarajevo [the capital of Bosnia] in 1914, the Austria-Hungarians blamed Serbia for it.

This would have just been a small war, fighting over Bosnia, but if you remember Austria-Hungary was allied with both Germany and Italy. So Germany and Italy got dragged into the war too.

Also, Russia had agreed to help Serbia, so Russia got dragged in. Russia, in turn, was allied with France and Britain. By now, most of the larger European countries were involved in the war, and it just escalated from there.

2I will do my best to answer this. The death of the Archduke lead to global conflict because his death upset Austria-Hungry and they wanted to attack Serbia but they knew that if they attacked Serbia then russia would come to the aid of Serbia so they asked germeny to back them if russia got involved and so Germany said ok so Austria-hungry attacked and russia started to mobilize there troops so Germany knew that somehow France was connected to russia so Germany decided to wipe out France so that they would not have to fight on both side of their borders. They decided to invade France through belgum which got Great Britain involved. and the rest is history!! 3When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated Austria-Hungary wanted to attack Serbia. They knew that if they attacked Serbia that Russia would defend Serbia. SO, they asked Germany to back them up if Russia were to attack them. Germany said Yes, so Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia, and Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, and Germany declared war on Russia. Thus, WWII was started.

This was because he was the heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne.

The Black Hand, an organization dedicated to having Bosnia go back to Serbian rule (as they were captured by Austra-Hungary) *assassinated the arch-duke (Gavrillo Princip was the assassin)*.

When this news arrived to the Austria-Hungarian government, they quickly demanded that Serbia take responsibility for their actions, and that troops from Austria-Hungary were allowed to patrol around Serbia.

Not wanting enemy troops on their land, they got the aid of Russia, who was also allied with Britain and France. They believed with this alliance, Austria-Hungary wouldn't dare attack, so they refused the offer. Austria-Hungary then quickly got help from Germany, who was allied with them and Italy.

So when Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia, it meant:

Members of the Triple Entente- Britain, France, Russia were at war with the

Members of the Triple Alliance - Austria-Hungary, Italy, Germany.

Now soon chaos in Europe ensues, many wars on many different fronts. **The Ottomans joined in alongside the Triple Alliance. Canada is forced into the war, as they were still a Dominion of the British Empire, meaning they could not make separate foreign policy choices.** And when a poor military decision by Germany was made to sink the Lusitania, a passenger ship with many Americans on it, it made USA hostile to Germany, and soon they were involved in the war too. Technically it wasn't a full "World" war like in World War 2, but still, involved many countries.

*edited for sense (only one line was added) and minor syntactical improvements by stogobo*

**added mention of the Ottoman Empire and reworded Canadian situation for clarity**

In short, the assassination of the duke caused Austro-Hungary to blame Serbia, thereby calling all allies of the countries to help whichever side they were on.

Gavrilo Princip successfully assassinated Franz Ferdinand on the 28th of June, 1914. The heir to the Austrian throne. This was done because Bosnia wanted to be free of Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary in turn, blamed the Serbian government. They demanded the Serbs give into a series of tough demands(Ultimatum) which consisted of 21 orders. Russia protected Serbia but Germany supported Austria-Hugary, they thought because they had the support of Germany they could do what they want. After Serbia stood up to them as they had support from France it led to ongoing quarrels which led to a direct cause of WW1. By JM.
After he was killed, Austria-Hungary wanted to send some reporters to investigate his death but Serbia didn't want them to come because the reporters would write bad things about Serbia. So they said no and Austria-Hungary got mad so they declared war on Serbia. Then France, Russia and Britain came to help Serbia and Germany and Italy helped Austria Hungary. And if you look at the size of all those countries empires, it was practically the whole world

Because Franz Ferdinand was shot by a Serb, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Germany, being an ally of Austria-Hungary, declared war on Serbia. Russia, an ally of Serbia, declared war on Austria-Hungary and Germany. France, a ally of Russia, declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. Germany invaded Belgium. Great Britain, being an ally of Belgium, declared war on Germany.

The Kingdom of Serbia was created in 1871 after its revolt against the Ottoman Empire. In 1914 Austria sent the Archduke Franz Ferdinand to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, to visit the government because the Bosian government filed a request for annexation by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire in 1913. While visiting in Sarajevo Archduke Ferdinand was shot by Serbian assassins. After rigorous investgations the Austrian-Hungarian Empire concluded that Serbia paid the assassins to kill the Archduke because the kingdom was nervous about bordering such a mighty empire (Austrian-Hungarian Empire). Thus Emperor Joseph, also to avenge his son's death, declared war on the Kingdom of Serbia. As a close ally of Serbia, Russia declares war the following day.
