There was only the Roman Empire. This is the only term the Romans had. Eastern Roman Empire and Western Roman Empire are terms invented by historians. What happened is that co-emperors were established, with one in the eastern part and the other in the western one. This was done to improve the defence of vast frontiers of the empire which were often under attack. One emperor concentrated on those in the west and the other on those in the east. Therefore, it cannot be said that the Eastern Roman Empire helped to unite an empire which was not divided.
Byzantine was the Eastern half of the Roman Empire and the half that controlled Greece.
Once Constantine adopted Christianity and set Christianity as the main Roman religion, he diverted fund which once went to pagan temples to new Christian churches which he had built all across the empire! (A this point the empire was a whole.) Once the funds for the pagan temples stopped, the temples very quickly disperser all over the empire, especially in the eastern parts of the empire! This lead to a very strong Christian presence in the eastern region until the Roman empire completely collapsed.

Charlemagne did not help the Romans. He was around some 300 years after the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. He helped the pope, who made him emperor of the Romans. Charlemagne created his own empire, which historians call Carolingian Empire, but was given the title of emperor of the Romans to symbolise the independence of western Europe and the papacy from the empire of the eastern Romans (also called Byzantines by historians). The eastern part of the Roman empire continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years after the fall of the western part of this empire. The eastern Roman emperors had been claiming of sovereignty over the city of Rome and the papacy.

The Roman Empire made Christianity the official religion of the Empire, and 'encouraged' the peoples it conquered to convert.

Italy's position in the Mediterranean was a key reason why the Roman empire was centred of the Mediterranean. It central position in that sea also helped to make it the geographical and economic pivot of the empire as it stood at the crossroad between the western and eastern basins of the Mediterranean and provided a link between this sea and the areas north of the Alps.
