There were several events both before and during the US Civil War where Harper's Ferry became an important place. The first issue concerning the US arsenal there was the take over target of abolitionist John Brown. He and his followers captured the arsenal and therefore had th weapons needed to carry out his planned slave revolt. The revolt failed, and most Americans did not want to see treason against the US. Brown highlighted the worst elements of abolitionism.Harper's Ferry was also a keystone in Robert E. Lee's raid into Maryland in 1862. In order to insure safe supply lines, the Union forces holding Harper's Ferry had to be captured. This took longer than expected. But Harper's Ferry was captured and the raid into Maryland continued.
To Northern abolitionists, it made John Brown a martyr of the movement.
To the South, it made the North look as though they favoured violent revolution.
On September 8, 1862, General Lee becomes aware of the fact that Union troops occupy Harpers Ferry. This is a danger to his plans as Lee expects to draw supplies from the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley. Lee is therefore compelled to capture Harpers Ferry and on September 9, 1862 his plan of operation is set forth.Lee decides to divide his army into three segments. One is led by generals Jackson and McLaws to capture Harpers Ferry. These troops will attack the fortified garrison from the west and the north. A second segment of his army is led by General Walker to attack Harpers Ferry from the southeast. A third division calls for General Longstreet to capture Boonsboro and Hagerstown as a base for future operations. This is the famous "lost order" that is retrieved by a Union soldier and given to General McClellan. He now has Lee's plans but advances with all precautions.

It means that Brown's death split the country down the middle on the slavery issue.
For the most part most Americans, both North and South, saw the Brown slave revolution as being radical and dangerous. Brown was a martyr to radical abolitionists, but for most Americans, Brown's violence was madness.
According to Brian McGinty's book, John Brown's Trail", Lincoln stated that John Brown had shown, "great courage, rare unselfishness." He went to state, however, that, "No man, North or South, can approve of violence or crime.(the attack at Harper's Ferry)."Enrique Avila, Berryton, Kansas.
No. No, the Harpers Ferry boat was never sunk by the North.
The raid deepened the division between the North and South
After being declared official ambassador of Rock & Roll, James Brown's wailing vocal attack on Harpers Ferry was greeted with jubalation in both North and South. John Brown's attack and its effect on the tension between North and South is another story.

Lee and his forces attacked Harpers Ferry on September 15-16, 1862. The Union garrison, commanded by Colonel Dixon Miles, surrendered on September 15 after a day of intense fighting. The Confederate victory at Harpers Ferry freed up Lee's forces to regroup and continue their invasion of the North.
No side. He was an Abolitionist fanatic, not at all representative of the North as a whole. His actions led the South to believe that the North was in favour of an armed rebellion of slaves, and that war was inevitable.
People in the North thought of John Brown as a hero. People in the South thought he was a criminal. He was captured by the Confederate army and executed.
