I'm not too sure about that, but I know it was first invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1964. It had 3 buttons and a wire connecting it to the computer. Bill English was his partner. He introduced it at a 90-minute presentation.
As can be seen in the image above, the housing was wood, the motion detectors were metal wheels, the rest was standard electronics components (e.g. optical sensors, push button, cable, connector).
It was built by Doug Engelbart in the early 1960s in his research lab at Stanford Research Institute. Initially nobody had any interest in it and generally it was considered to be an impractical "lab curiosity" without practical uses.

A wireless mouse comes with a reciever. The mouse transmits signals to the reciever which is plugged into the computer. This tells the computer where the mouse is moving, just as one with a wire would.
