It opened people's eyes to something that had been refuted by science for a long number of years. However once accepted, many tools were created in society to eliminate the common germs that live on our skin. One example of the effect the germ theory had on society was hand sanitizer. Not until the germ theory came out did they think people should have an alcohol based helper/neutralizer to kill germs
