The Apaches did not have a good relationship with the white settlers. During the gold rush, the settlers invaded the Apaches land and killed many of their people. The Apaches were also accused of kidnapping Cochise, which in turn led to the Apache War.

Once Spanish and later Mexican or American farmers and ranchers settled on the fringe of the Apacheria they brought their livestock and plants and goods with them. So they became splendid and high valued targets for Apache raids to supplement their economy based upon gathering, some agriculture, hunting - and raiding. They even regarded the settlers and farmers as their "gardeners" who tended their livestock, raised their corn and wheat and so the Apache had had no intention to drive the newcomers completely out the land. For almost three hundred years the various Apache tribes had the upper hand in the struggle between the Spanish/Mexican and their Indian allies (Upper and Lower Pima, Opata, Tarahumara, Coahuilteca, Pueblo and by 1786 Comanche) and kept their foes ad bay - the Spanish and Mexican never get a foothold into the Apacheria.

In times of war captives were also taken by the Apache - children were raised as Apache (boys became warriors, girls became a warriors wife) and elder captives were taken as slaves or sold on slave markets.
