Atlantic and Pacific
As in WW1 against Germany, Australia was obliged to defend it's colony against Japan. So it recalled its troops from the Middle East where they were fighting a European war and faced this first major threat to itself. Previous commitments to wars were promoting the interests of Britain, not defence of Australia, but now Australia was under direct threat for the first time and the invasion of New Guinea posed a direct threat, and New Guinea became an essential part its own defence.
Australia fought with Great Britain and her ally the USA. They fought against the Japanese Empire and Nazi Germany but the majority of Australia's fighting was based in the Pacific.
The Pacific war was fought between Japan and the US, plus allies such as Britain, Netherlands, China, Australia
The Menzies government had committed Australia to World War 2, blindly following Britain. Our troops were committed to the war in Europe and the Middle East even though Germany was not threatening Australia. When the Japanese entered the war, there was a direct threat to Australia, and with Britain fully committed to Europe, Australia had no alternative to allying with the US for protection. This realism of meeting threats to Australia and Britain's post-war withdrawal from South East Asia meant that Australia's strategic interests were interlocked with those of the US in the Pacific.
Britain and Australia were staunch allies, fighting together to victory in North Africa, and to defeat through Malaya. After the loss of Singapore, Australia realised that the United States would be the only nation that could provide them with large support to resist invasion. However, the two nations still worked together, particularly the British Pacific fleet which contained the Royal Australian Navy, where they fought at Okinawa.
Because the US were helping Australia in the pacific against the japaniese, whereas the British were off fighting in Europe and nor helping Australia.
Aside from Australians who had enlisted into the British military prior to the outbreak of WWII, they really weren't - they were pretty tied up in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.
Great Britain was the nation that colonised both Australia and New Zealand for their resources. Colonising both countries enabled furred expansion of the British Empire, while their position in the South Pacific gave Great Britain a strategic presence in that part of the world.
Australia is west of the Pacific Ocean.
