Peninsular plateau also called the Deccan plateau is a flat landscape--an elevated (raised), broad tableland.

Formation

In some parts of the world, there were some cracks or holes (called vents) in the crust of earth. So, the molten rocks called magma emerged out from the mantle on to the surface of earth through these vents. This magma then got cooled and solidified to form igneous rocks. Large volumes of magma spread over a large surface area of earth produced a high level land called plateau, extending over several hundred square kilometres.
The west-central part of India called Deccan Plateau was formed in this way by the eruption and solidification of magma over a long period. The thickness of these magma deposits in the Deccan Plateau exceeds 1000 meters. The formation of plateaus is a special case of volcanoes in which the volcanic eruptions take place along
narrow fissures or cracks in the earth's crust, which may be several hundred kilometres in length. These are actually called fissure eruptions.
