As Rome was the capital of the Empire, it was probably considered necessary that Rome should have the largest of many amphitheaters, and so the emperors could stage the violent games on a grander scale, as provincial governors and lesser officials did with smaller amphitheaters. The gladiatorial games, executions, mock sea battles, and animal slaughters satisfied the public need for violent spectacle, and the most popular emperors, governors, etc. were often the ones who presented the most entertaining spectacles. It should be noted that amphitheaters were built in every Roman province (except for Greece where the concept of killing for entertainment did not catch on), but the Colosseum remained the largest. Also, Rome had two smaller amphitheaters which it had possibly outgrown as the population of the city increased.

∙ 10y agoThe Colosseum did not really affect the modern world except to perhaps send observant people into a state of shock and awe considering that the structure is still standing after nearly 2,000 years. Its a marvel of Roman engineering and innovation and despite being stripped of its valuable outer decor, surviving an earthquake, flood, neglect and tourists, is still a monument to the grandeur and glory that was the Roman Empire.

∙ 10y agoThe actual name of the Colosseum was Flavian amphitheatre. It was named after the emperors of the Flavian dynasty. Vespasian (reigned 69-79 AD) stated it construction in 70 AD. His son and successor, Titus (reigned 79-81 AD) completed it and inaugurated it in 80 AD. Titus' brother Domitian (reigned 51-96 AD) made some modifications.
Amphitheatres were round or, more usually, oval arenas with seating all around. They were used for gladiatorial games. The gladiatorial combats were the Romans' most popular form of entertainment together with the chariot races. The games lasted the whole day or several days. They included various forms of entertainment and culminated with the gladiators' combats at the end. These games were one of the highlights of Roman life. The Roman elites thought that to prevent the masses of poor from rioting they had to be kept happy through the distribution of a grain dole which gave them free bread and the provision on plenty of entertainment. This view was summed up with the expression "bread and circuses" - the circus was the Chariot Racing track. Some emperors staged extra gladiatorial games because they thought this would make them more popular.
The gladiatorial games were a massive event. You can get an idea their magnitude by looking at the schedule of the day, which started at 8 am and ended at dusk:

Comic acts with clowns and dwarfs
Acrobatic and gymnastic acts
Tightrope walking
Music and dances
Animal acts similar to those at the circus
Tortures and executions
Boxing
Martial fights

∙ 10y agoBeing an arena for Gladiatorial games, the Colosseum was very popular as the Romans loved gladiatorial combats. The Roman aristocracy thought that this helped to ensure social cohesion. This was reflected in the expression bread and circuses. They thought that the poor could be prevented from rioting by providing the free bread (through the grain dole for the poor) and plenty of entertainments. The circus was the racing track for chariot races. The Romans also loved chariot races.

∙ 10y agoThe Colosseum did not change Roman society. A building does not change society. The Colosseum was an arena for gladiatorial games which was built to replace a previous one which had been the first part-stone arena. It had been inaugurated by Augustus in 29-30 BC and burned down in 64 AD. The gladiatorial games had been very popular in Rome long before the construction of the Colosseum.
The only change the Colosseum made was that its huge size made it possible to hold much larger gladiatorial games. Besides replacing the old arena, the Colosseum was built to:
- To reclaim the area in front of Nero's enormous palace (the Domus Aurea, Golden House) for public use;
- To celebrate the Roman victory against the Jews in the revolt of the First Roman-Jewish War (66-73 AD).
- To show the grandeur of Emperor Vespasian and bolster his position as emperor as he obtained his position through wars between rival claimants to the imperial title.
The actual name of the Colosseum was Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium). It was named after the three emperors of the Flavian dynasty who built it. Colosseum was a nickname which is thought to have been derived from a colossal statue of Nero nearby which was called Colossus, after the Colossus of Rhodes.
