The Soviet Union exploded their first atomic bomb for multiple reasons. Firstly, they wished to test their nuclear capabilities, and further refine their nuclear weapons. Secondly, they wished to say to the world, 'We have nuclear weapons!' This would allow them to have an extra bargaining chip in world discussions, and weakened the bargaining power of the US' nuclear weapons.

The major reason was to verify that the spies had provided correct design details and not some kind of deliberate disinformation given them by US intelligence personnel (both Stalin and Beria were very "paranoid" about the possibility of such deception). If the bomb worked not only would it break the US atomic weapons monopoly, but it would prove that their spy network was not compromised and could still be used to provide reliable information on future work on nuclear weapons. If the bomb failed there was a good chance that US intelligence had compromised their spy network and was using it to mislead the Soviets into wasting time and effort on incorrect methods and dead ends.

Only after this test did Stalin and Beria permit their own atomic scientists to explode atomic bombs that they had designed themselves and that actually worked better than the stolen MK-III Manhattan Project design.

The USSR's first atomic bomb was a copy of the US MK-III Fat Man bomb, built from plans stolen by their spies in Los Alamos. The two main spies were Klaus Fuchs & Ted Hall.
