The Viking raids on Europe from mid 700s to 1066 left the region fearful of attack. At first the attacks were just hit and run raids. They showcased the speed of the Vikings ships which could travel up rivers with no difficulty. Then came colonization. Europe was losing land to the Viking Immigration due to lack of land in some of the Scandinavian countries. The last period of Viking invasion was that of large scale armies. What became of this is that the European countries started paying Danegeld which is Dane Gold in exchange for not being attacked by the Vikings.
