Instead of going through the Franco-German border they went through Belgium. Belgium had a treaty with Britain and so declared war on Germany. Britain was then allied wiith France, Belgium and russia against Germany. The Lusitania was sunk in the Atlantic by a U-Boat and so America joined the war
