Soldiers used trenches as a defensive means of avoiding being shot at directly, by small arms fire, or by enemy artillery. I think they were first used in the American Civil War, notably at the siege of Vicksburg. The Boer War in South Africa and most especially WW1 had much use of trenches. They were built to combat the power & accuracy of rifles & machine guns which had superceded the musket in the 19th century. The use of trench warfare made the enemy infantry soldier harder to shoot & improved the defensive sides chances of winning the conflict. This made attritional conflict a better option, but this takes time & resources to implement.......
