Korea was divided after WWII, because the Soviets (Russians) were occupying that area due to their entry into the war against Japan (they declared war on Japan as soon as the A-Bomb was dropped). War commenced 5 years later (1950-1953). Joseph Stalin was still the Head of the Soviet Union when the Korean War began, and when he died in 1953, the Korean War also ended. North Korea was most heavily supported/backed by the Soviets (Russians). Vietnam was divided in 1954 (after the Korean War). North Vietnam was most heavily supported by Red China. Due to it's proximity, North Vietnamese jet pilots preferred to train in Red China (although many MIG-17, MIG-21 North Viet Pilots trained in the USSR), MIG-19 (J-6 models) jet fighters, and the majority of the SKS rifles, K-54 pistols, AK-47 assault rifles, Chicom Hand Grenades, trucks, mortars, land mines, etc. came from Red China. During the war, nearly all GI's referred to captured enemy weapons as, "Chicoms." Example: when a grenade was thrown at us, we'd yell out, "CHICOM!" then throw ourselves onto our stomachs (hit the ground). If we yelled out, "grenade" that normally meant that we were throwing it.

According to 1954 Geneva Agreement, Vietnam was temporarily split into two areas in order for the the French to withdraw, and a nationwide election would be held in 1956. However, in the South, a US-backed political force led by the Ngo family called for independence and established the so-called Republic of Vietnam. The Democratic Rep. of Vietnam didn't agree with that and worked hard to unify the South. The Americans then came with military intervention. In 1973, US had to withdraw due to the Paris Accord. South VN then became difficult with lack of money and corruption. In 1975, Saigon fell to North Vietnam. In 1976, the two parts were reunified.

Why isn't Vietnam and Korea called Vietnams and Koreas when America is called Americas. When they all are split up into a north and a south part?

IMHO.. Its because both Korea and Vietnam have a long history of being one united country before being split into two (the same reason why nobody called Ireland the Ireland's just because its split into the north and the republic). In contrast the Americas have never been one unified country and have a wide range of cultures, ethnic groups and nation states in them.
