If you own a car with a manual transmission, there can be several warning signs that your clutch is going bad.
When the clutch pedal is fully released, the engine should be gear-locked to the tires. This means that the tachometer (the dial usually on the left, listing RPMs) should move proportionally to the speedometer (usually on the right or center, listing MPH or KM/Hr). While driving, try momentarily flooring the accelerator. (Safely, of course!) If the tachometer jumps a lot more than the speedometer, your clutch may be slipping. Take it to a mechanic to be replaced.
If you smell a strange smell coming from your car, it could be the clutch material burning. Clutches have a very particular smell, so try to find someone familiar with it to tell you if it's the clutch or something else. Brakes can have similar problems.
Burning clutches can be a sign of several issues. If you have an older cable clutch, your cable may need to be tightened. Have a mechanic do this. If you have a newer car with a hydraulic clutch, your lines may need to be bled. Have it evaluated by a mechanic.
Don't forget to ensure that you depress the clutch pedal fully. Pressing the pedal only part-way causes the clutch plates to rub, which can wear them out if dome for too long. As a rule of thumb, you are rubbing your plates too much if you start to smell the clutch burning.
As with all auto mechanics issues, consulting with a qualified mechanic is key. Do not rely on the internet for proper, accurate diagnosis.

How do you know when you need a new clutch?
It is very easy to test your car for a worn clutch. Driving on road put 2nd or 3rd gear, push all way down accelerator pedal, car will not run as it should, only engine will speed up its rpm. This means clutch fiber is worn; traction has been lost and clutch disc should be replaced.

Most likely, the clutch or the clutch pilot bearing is dragging. This is caused by clutch hydraulic leaks not letting the clutch fully disengage or the clutch pressure plate/disc/flywheel is warped. Crawl under the car, (engine off)have a friend push/release pedal, see if slave cylinder throw seems adequate and look for leaks. If throw is short, problem is in the clutch hydraulics; if throw is normal, problem is the clutch.
