They wanted to be a part of the programs that the Kennedy presidency championed, such as being a part of the Civil Rights Movement, or run for political office themselves.
Young Americans have not changed much since Kennedy. Most of them are more interested in finding a mate and getting a job than in worrying about what they could do for the country. A lot got government jobs, but I am not sure how many did so primarily to serve the country.
