Does The Bible Accept SlaveryShort answer:No. Does the Bible Give Reliable Historical Information About The Life of People in Bible TimesShort answer:Yes. All the above verses demonstrate very well that the Bible gives reliable and accurate information about social customs and practices. What we need to ask is whether or not the Bible and its teachins caused or led to the practice of slavery. Ordinary Encyclopedias state that slavery goes back thousands of years before the time of Moses who many understand to have written the Pentateuch. If we follow the discredited JEDP Documentary Hypothesis put forward by Wellhausen and others then the early books of the Bible are even further removed in time from slavery's origin.

Secondly we should note that to report facts as the Bible does is not the same as approving or encouraging them. What we need to note is the proper context, what type of passage it is and what its real message is. In all my Bible reading I have found many different issues discussed in the Bible but slavery is not one that is specifically or directly addressed.

From the above it cannot be concluded that the Bible has nothing to say on the issue, just that slavery is not the focus. That is all.

The March 25 2007 AnniversaryTwo hundred years ago royal assent was granted for the law to abolish slavery in the British Empire. It certainly wasn't those who were anti-Bible or those who wrongly used the Bible. Both of these groups actively opposed this measure. William Wilberforce, a genuine Bible-believing Christian, on the basis of the Bible, rightly interpreted and applied, opposed it. The main two arguments are that all people are made in God's image and that we are all of one blood - both Bible teachings.

Charles Finney the revival preacher specifically mentioned slavery as the reason why God was not "blessing" the Southern slave states with revival as happened in the North. He saw this as the Holy Spirit being grieved by slavery.

Answer"Slavery was incorporated into the civil institutions of Moses; it was recognized accordingly by Christ and his apostles." -- Rev. Dr. Nathan Lord, President of Dartmouth College.

"At the time of the advent of Jesus Christ, slavery in its worst forms prevailed over the world. The Savior found it around him in Judea; the apostles met with it in Asia, Greece and Italy. How did they treat it? Not by denunciation of slave-holding as necessarily sinful." -- Prof. Hodge of Princeton.

"I have no doubt if Jesus Christ were now on earth that he would, under certain circumstances, become a slaveholder." -- Rev. Dr. Taylor of Yale.

Rousseau says: "Christ preaches only servitude and dependence.... True Christians are made to be slaves."

from WvafanWhile it is true that a system of servitude existed among God's ancient people, but that did not resemble the tyrannical form of bondage that existed in the US during Lincoln's day. For example, God's Law to Israel stated that kidnapping and selling a human being was punishable by death. (Exodus 21:16) The Bible states that Jehovah God does not approve of 'man dominating man to his injury,' and this would include abusive slavery. (Ecclesiastes 8:9) THE BIG PICTUREThis is a very brief summary of the history of slavery as it relates chronologically to the Bible's historical setting.

SLAVERY BEGINS - at least 3500 BC or earlier (Moses c.1400 BC)

SLAVERY TOLERATED BUT SOFTENED (see above answer) - Old Testament

- New Testament - Be not slaves of men

SLAVERY ABOLISHED 1807 British Empire

1 Jan 1863 USA Emancipation Proclamation

Dec. 18 1865 Full Abolition USA

Thus we see clearly that slavery predated Moses by about 2000 years.

Note: Even if Lincoln is not regarded as a Christian he certainly was profoundly influenced by the Bible which he read and quoted regularly and with respect.

What argument used to justify slavery appealed to people's religeus beliefs?

The argument used to justify slavery based on religious beliefs often cited passages from the Bible that appeared to support the idea of slavery, such as verses that discussed servitude or owning slaves. Slave owners would often interpret these passages as approval from God to own slaves and use them for labor. This interpretation was used to maintain control over enslaved individuals and justify the cruelty of slavery.

What argument used to justify slavery appealed to peoples religious beliefs?

Some individuals justified slavery by citing biblical passages that seemed to condone owning slaves, such as from the Old Testament. They argued that slavery was a natural part of society and even beneficial for the enslaved individuals, as it could provide them with the opportunity to be introduced to Christianity and thus save their souls.

Was slavery held to be justified by the Bible and Christianity?

Some Christians had slaves; some Christians worked to abolish slavery. Christians who owned slaves sometimes would quote scripture to justify slavery--there is a passage that says (International Standard Version (©2008) Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only while being watched in order to please them, but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord.)

Why did Albert barn say slavery was wrong even though it was found in the Bible?

Most human beings would say that slavery is wrong. Just because something is found in The Bible does not justify it being done. Consider that rape, incest, and murder are also found in the Bible as are most of the wayward ways of mankind.
