Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water supply hose. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Remove the thermostat. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.

go to autozone.com and enter your 2001 Nissan frontier,engine size ,2wd or 4wd,then look up thermostat,then to the right of screen,click on repair guide and it will show and tell you how to replace.
The position of the Thermostat depends on the engine. In the 4.7liter it is near the bottom of the engine. Follow the hose From the radiator. Where it connects there are two screws. Remove those and the thermostat is under this piece. On the 3.9 v6 and 5.9liter it is at the top radiator hose where it goes into the engine. Empty coolant first.
Follow the upper rad hose to the engine and at the engine there is the thermostat housing. Make sure when replacing the thermostat the spring goes toward the engine.
