The AMC starter bendix is prone to lack of lubrication issues. Here's a permananet fix: remove battery cable Pull the starter Clean the spiral gear that the overrunning clutch rides on with WD40. This is the gear and starter shaft under the starter end cone. I soak "spray" them and use a toothbrush to get all the crud out. Relubricate with a slight smear of MOS2 grease (don't go overboard here) Lightly lubricate the solenoid pivot point under the sheetmetal cover. Reassemble and test. If it still hangs it's time for a rebuild.

It is quite simple. Disconnect the battery first. On the starter there is one wire that you need to disconnect. Remove the two bolts holding the starter and pull it forward (towards the front of the vehicle) and out. Reverse for installation.
There is only one difference between AMC and Comprehensive AMC. Comprehensive AMC is annual maintenance contract with services and AMC is only service with no maintenance included.
I would suspect a defective ignition switch. I would be more inclined to believe it was the starter relay/solenoid thingy i used to have an old amc eagle. and it did same thing starter wouldn't disengage. I replaced the solenoid/starter relay and it worked fine after that.
telling ur father to buying it
Of course the mileage is a big factor. Without knowing that it's hard to say. These cars are not common, and the way to get the most money for it is find your local AMC owners club and you will find some interested party I'm sure.
