The negative cable almost always goes to the engine block then it has a strap that grounds the block to the frame and body. There could be several of these "straps" or wires. They usually look like a braided metal rope except flattened out. I hope this helps you.
Remove the positive battery cable from your 1997 Toyota Corolla battery. Tighten the starter with the retaining bolts. Attach the cables to the front of the starter. Reattach the positive cable to the battery.

For 1990-94 vehicles, remove the battery and battery tray from the engine compartment. For 1990-94 vehicles, detach the speedometer cable connector from the transaxle. Detach the starter motor electrical connections. Unfasten the starter motor mounting bolts, then remove the starter from the vehicle. Clean both surfaces of starter motor flange and rear plate. Install the starter motor onto the engine and secure with the retainer bolts. Tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying figure. Attach the electrical harness connector(s) to the starter. If removed, install the intake manifold stay and tighten the retainers to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). For 1990-94 vehicles, attach the speedometer cable to the transaxle. Install the battery tray and battery. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables. Operate the starter to assure proper operation.
pretty straightforward, disconnect negative battery cable, remove and label wiring from starter, remove bolts from that connect starter to the transmission housing. Replace with new starter, attach mounting bolts, reconnect wiring, and negative battery cable, and ur good to go.
Disconnect battery, starter is located somewhere by where engine meets transmission. Remove all electric connections then remove bolts securing starter. Install new starter, attach electric connections, connect battery and your done.

The vehicle battery's main purpose is to supply power for the starting system and to power some accessories when the engine is not running. The proper procedure for changing or installing a battery... remove the battery cable first from the negative battery terminal, then from the positive. Install opposite, attach the positive cable lead, then the negative.

The negative cable actually is bolted to the engine block, and the positive cable will go to the solenoid that is attached to the radiator support. On newer models, the solenoid would be attached to the starter, and then, of course, the positive cable would connect at the solenoid down below on the starter.
The Starter on a 1995 Mustang THe starter is located at the bottom of the engine near just off the flywheel. Disconnect the battery, then the wires going to the starter, unbolt the old starter, bolt in the new starter, attach the wires, connect the battery and you're done.
