The negative cable goes to the body of the car at some point,
You connect the cables BEFORE you plug in or turn on the charger. Positive (red) to battery positive first, then negative (black) to battery ground. Then you turn on your charger and set the timer.
Black is negative - Red is positive +

Connect the positive (+) Red cable from the charger to the positive (+) post of the battery. Now connect the negative (-) Black cable to a metal part of the engine. Do not connect to negative battery post. Plug the charger in. Unplug the charger before removing the cables. Disconnect the negative cable first.
Connect the positive + red charger cable to the positive + red battery post. Then connect the negative - black charger cable to the engine somewhere. Most engines have something metal sticking up that you can connect to. Do not connect the negative charge cable to the negative battery post, always connect it to the engine.
I'm not sure what you're asking but maybe its this: Red is Positive (+) and Black is Negative (-).

The two wires which connect the timer switch on a Century 87423 battery charger are the red and black wires. The red goes to the positive connector while the black goes to the negative connector.
Not sure if the question is what to charge the battery with or how to charge the battery. So, I will address both: A regular battery charger can be used. IF you are going to purchase one, you really don't need a top-of-the-line, expensive charger. A simple 2 to 6 amp slow-trickle charger will do the job. To charge the battery, connect the red charger cable to the positive battery post and the black charger cable to the negative battery post, then turn on the charger until the battery is charged. If necessary, clean the battery posts and cables before charging. The battery charger will have more complete details for charging the battery.
A typical car battery charger will plug into a wall outlet. The end that connects to the battery itself generally has aligator clips on two different leads. The black one is your ground or negative, the red is your positive. Attach each clip to its corrisponfing battery post. Follow the directions for your specific charger to ensure your charge the battery properly.
