The fuse box for the 1996 Audi Cabriolet is under the hood on the driver's side in the area where the windshield wipers are (behind and above the cowl). It's right in the corner of driver's side. Snap open the top cover, slide to the right out of hinges and remove fuse cover.

It should be to the left of the dash in a compartment when the door is open or under the hood in a fuse holder there.
I just opened under hood fuse box on my 2005 cruiser. There is a black clip-like assembly on the driver's side edge of the cover for the fuse box that you move and the cover comes right off.
Fuses are under the hood, behind the little door left of the dashboard with the door open, and under the rear seat.
