The religions of Mesopotamia and Egypt are polytheistic, meaning they worship many gods. Judaism is the first religion to believe in one God, when Abraham was told by God that he had promised him a land in the West, where his descendants and followers will number more greatly than the stars.

Modern Judaism, Christianity and Islam are monotheistic.

• Judaism became strictly monotheistic at around the time of the Babylonian Exile, but before this it was monolatrous (belief that more than one God exists, but only one God need to be worshipped) and was even earlier, during the early monarchy, polytheistic.
  
• Some scholars call Christianity "weakly monotheistic", not only because of the Holy Trinity, with three Gods in one, but because of the autonomous nature and power of the Christian Satan.
• Islam is also regarded as strongly monotheistic, although this religion also has a powerful, autonomous Satan and the Jinn.
