They study the past to know how or when we got into the world and also to know animals that lived in the past. They learn about the past because the past affects the modern day and how we think.
Since I am not a scientist I can only speculate, but I will try. The study of prehistory has to do with one thing, how we got here. Every Ancient civilization has a creation myth, some actually have the same or intertwine in some form. The awesome thing about history is that nowhere in history do we find a beginning, what we believe is the beginning is always a continuation. How can we understand the end, if the beginning remains a mystery. There are no doubt lost civilizations, that will never be found or are waiting to be found. The continent of Antarctica is shown to have coal under the sheet of ice, this can only mean one thing...There was flora there at some point in history, where there is flora there is fauna, so who knows what we could find out from getting underneath that ice. It could answer many, many questions. I am not sure if you are a religious person, but I find Religion to be the lazy mans history and Archaeology to the intellectuals history
Prehistory is a study of events and things that may have been in existence before records could be kept. This study helps human beings to understand their origins and what may have happened to create the world in existence today.
This is because history is the study of the written past, while prehistory is the study of the unwritten past.

Scientists use a variety of evidence to study prehistoric times, including fossils, geologic strata, archaeological artifacts, DNA analysis, climate data, and isotopic analysis of elements found in ancient specimens. By examining these different types of evidence, scientists can reconstruct past environments, track the evolution of species, and understand human history.
