How can trailer brakes kill you?

1 way trailer brakes can get you killed...If you are going down a long steep grade (hill) your car/truck brakes (which are only made to stop your car or truck) will get hot and glaze over and eventually completely fail if your trailer brakes don't work properly. You will probably go over the side of the hill, crash into something and kill yourself and possibly other people. If it don't work, don't tow it.

Why does your Honda Odyssey shake when you apply the brakes?

You probably have a warped brake rotor. This can happen when the brakes get over heated, usually when "riding the brakes" while going down a long steep hill. Use a lower gear rather than keep continuous pressure on the brakes. The rotors will have to be replaced.

Does the use of brakes on a long steep downgrade is only a supplement to the braking effect of the engine?

yes

Which of these describes how you should use the brake pedal on a steep downhill grade?

Put pressure on, let off of it, reapply pressure on the brake as needed, let off of it again. You never ride your brakes down a hill - you'll burn them out. If you start seeing smoke coming from your wheels during and/or immediately after braking, you need to stop that truck completely, and sit long enough to let the brakes cool down, unless you somehow think the idea of having to use an escape ramp is thrilling.

How is steep used in a sentence?

That asking price seems rather steep. Put your car into a lower gear to drive down a long, steep hill. Let the tea steep for several minutes.

On a long steep descent which is better for your car gearing down with high revs or using brakes to slow down?

By far the best method to slow down is to look at the road ahead to work out if you need to slow down, and then to back off the accelerator (gas pedal) and let the car slow naturally so that you arrive at the next bend/junction (or whatever) without actually having to use the brakes or down-shift at all.Otherwise, use the brakes, they are cheaper and easier to replace when they wear out than the engine/transmission.

What slows down cars and bicycles?

Going up long, steep grades.

Where is off button for overdrive in Hyundai atlantra?

I own a 2000 and it's on the gearshift. I honestly can't think of a time that you would want to turn it off...possibly going down a long steep grade and then it wouldn't be that much help.

What factors determine your selection of a speed when going down a long steep downgrade?

the condition of road

Why should you be in the proper gear before starting down a hill in a semi-truck?

supposedly the proper gear for going down a hill in a semi is the same gear it would take to get up the hill. this came about years ago when trucks and braking systems were not as good as they are today. the reason for this being that the negine would keep you slowed enuff to control the truck if the brakes failed. remember that years ago semis did not have air brakes In my opinion it is still safer on long steep grades to select a low gear (possibly even lower than the gear that you ascended the hill in) to decend a grade. My reasoning is this. Even with air brakes the greatest majority of class 8 trucks in North America have drum brakes that when overheated by too much use expand the drum and lessen the stopping capacity of the brakes. If you constantly using the brakes while traveling downhill you degrade your stopping power until the drums cool again and return to their original size. If you decend a grade at a speed where your Jake brakes sustain your speed and you do not have to touch the service brake pedal in an emergency situation you have the full capability of your drum brakes to slow the truck.

Why should I repair my front brakes?

If you don't repair your front brakes, your back brakes will wear down faster. This will cost you more money in the long run. It's probably important to have all your brakes working.

What is the best way to control speed on a steep downhill road Brakes or Lower gear?

It depends on the length and steepness of the gradient. On a short slope, or one that is not very steep, use the brakes. But not continuously. On a long or steep slope (as in going down a mountain), the brakes could overheat and stop working before you got to the bottom, or even burn up. In this case, it's best to use a lower gear and get the engine to do the braking, keeping your brakes cool in case you need them to stop. In some extreme cases, you may find that even the lowest gears will not sufficiently slow your vehicle, due to weight, slope, or other factors. In extreme cases, a sustained high RPM in the engine can cause damage. You should therefore avoid routes which constantly tax your vehicle's limits in favor of less steep alternatives. In many areas, heavy vehicles are not allowed on the steepest sections of some highways.
