guns are used as a protection because if someone is threatining your life then a gun is there incase of an act of violence brought to ones body.
Added: (in the US) There is also a school of thought that believes that private ownership of firearms helps ensure that the very government which 'oversees' our activities will not turn into a Dictatorship that runs and controls every aspect of our lives, thereby destroying the very freedoms which gun ownership help us to establish in the first place.
