Your pet hermit crabs were harvested from the wild, as it is nearly impossible, without a very complex set up, for hermit crabs to hatch and live past the zoea stage. Generally this complex of a setup is only found in scientific laboratories, as one must mimic the fluctuating tides of the ocean. As far as I know, even scientists have an extremely hard time breeding hermit crabs with success in captivity.
There are times when one may purchase a female hermit crab that is already carrying eggs, and you may find them in your marine salt water dish (you should definitely have marine salt water available to them, they need it for molting), but they won't survive long if they hatch at all.
