The cap has a tang that must fit into the housing before you can engage the retainers.
Need to know the year of engine to answer correctly.
The two locations it could be are 1. Top rear of engine next to distributor 2. Bottom drivers side of engine above the oil filter. The second option is more likely as it was moved to this location on most vehicles in the early to mid 80s.

On a small block Chevy the distributor goes through a hole in the intake manifold. On a Pontiac the distributor goes behind the intake manifold.
It is screewed into the top of the engine block right behind the distributor. It is HARD to get to and see.
It is screwed into the top of the engine block RIGHT behind the distributor towards drivers side.
YES it will fit right in.
From the front of the vehicle looking towards the rear of the vehicle it's on the top right hand side of the engine on the right side of the distributor at the base of the distributor cap
