Usually it takes a 3/8 or a 1/2 inch rachet on the spring loaded tensioner. simply put the rachet in the square hole and loosen the tension to get the belt off.

The belt tension should adjust automatically. There's a thing called a belt tensioner that has a strong spring in it (you can't see the spring) that keeps pressure applied to the belt. This belt tensioner is what makes the serpentine belt so hard to remove. Many times the tensioner is in a difficult place access.

How do you change the serpentine belt on a 1995 grand am?

There is a belt tensioner at or near the top of the belt run area. It has a pulley on it and is spring loaded, plus it has a provision for a wrench to be attached or inserted into it. Simply use your wrench to release the tension and you will find it is easy to remove the belt. Before you do anything, observe how the old belt runs across the pulleys so you can replace it properly. I hope this helps you. Mark

How do you release the belt tension on a 2003 dodge grand caravan?

If you're talking about the serpentine belt, there is a belt tensioner between the water pump pulley and the anti-vibration pulley, both of which are visible when you remove the right front tire and the plastic cover. There is also a diagram of the location of these items in front of the radiator under the hood. To remove the tension on the serpentine belt, take a pry bar and pry the pulley end of the belt tensioner down using the frame as the pry point. The spring on the tensioner is pretty stiff, so it will take some effort.

How do you replace the serpentine belt for a 1998 Grand Am?

For most cars and trucks there is a diagram showing the pattern the belt should take for each pulley. This is usually located under the hood on the radiator support. The vehicles I've had experience with have an idler pulley which supplies tension on the serpentine belt. This pulley is spring loaded, by using the correct size wrench, pull up on the pulley, relieving the tension on the belt and sliding the belt off or on.
