Under the hood, on the driver's side near the back is the yellow transmission dipstick. If you know that you need transmission fluid, you have already located it. Make sure that you check the level with the engine running. Anyway, to answer your question, head on over to your auto parts store or Wal-Mart and get a funnel with a hose on it that is made to fill automatic transmissions. You put the fluid in the same tube as the dip stick occupies. (Remove the dipstick before filling but don't forget to put it back in when you're done.) Careful not to overfill (Difference between none on the stick and full is often less than a quart.) and use Dexron III. Good luck! --Ken

How much automatic transmission fluid is needed for the 2006 Subaru Forester?

I believe that your 2006 is similar to my 2000 and 1996 models. When you drain the fluid via the drain plug on the driver's side of the transmission, refill is about 4 quarts. This is not the same as the total capacity of the transmission because you cannot drain the torque converter this way. Changing the fluid every year is the best way to extend the life of your transmission.
