Doesn't matter whether it's hot or cold. Bring #1 up to tdc and adjust 1,2,5,7 intakes and 1,3,4,8 exhausts. Rotate the engine one turn to put #6 at tdc then do the rest of the valves.

How do you adjust the valves on a 1984 Chevy Corvette engine?

== == Remove rocker arm covers. Crank the engine until piston #1 is at top dead center (TDC) and is in it's firing position. This is indicated when the mark on the harmonic balancer lines up with the center or "0" mark on the timing tab and the #1 valve is not moving as TDC is approached. You could also remove the distributor cap and verify that the rotor is pointing at or near plug #1. If the #1 valves move as the mark comes up to the timing tab, the engine is in #6 firing position and should be turned over one complete revolution. With the engine in the #1 firing position and at TDC, the following valves may be adjusted: * Exhaust valves 1,3,4 & 8 * Intake valves 1,2,5 & 7 To adjust the valves, back out the adjusting nut on the rocker arm so as to allow you to rotate the push rod with your fingers. Then tighten the nut just to the point where play has been removed and you can no longer rotate the rod with your fingers. Then tighten the nut one full additional turn. Now crank the engine one revolution until the pointer is again at TDC. This is the #6 firing position and the following valves may now be adjusted: * Exhaust valves 2,5,6 & 7 * Intake valves 3,4,6 & 8 Install rocker arm covers.

How do you adjust tappets?

Hey Dave==This does apply to the 305 since it is a chev engine. A 301 is a PONT engine and they have stops for the adjusting nuts. The 350 and 305 have hydraulic lifters and adjust as follows: Pull the coil wire so the engine won' start and bump the engine until the valves on #1 cylinder are both closed. Now turn the engine so the timing mark is on TDC. Adjust the following valves: INT 1-2-5-7 EX 1-3-4-8 Then turn the engine one turn so now it is firing on #6 cyl and adjust the folowing valves: INT 3-4-6-8 EXH 2-5-6-7 . When adjusting the valves, loosten the adjusting nut intil there is clearance between the rocker arm and valve end. Then tighten it just until there is no clearance{you can feel this if you turn the push rod while you tighten the nut} then turn the nut 3/4 turn MORE. This will compress the valve and the lifter will compensate. You can adjust them with the engine running but the oil goes EVEYWHERE and sometimes catches on fire. GoodluckJoe

Can you adjust the valves on a 5.7 vortec while its running?

Yes you can, but you can do a better job with less mess by adjusting the preload with the engine not running. With the engine at #1 TDC, you can set 1, 2, 5, & 7 intakes and 1, 3, 4, & 8 exhausts. Rotate the engine one revolution to #6 TDC and adjust the rest. To adjust: tighten the nut on the rocker until there is no up and down motion of the pushrod (0 backlash) plus an extra 1/4-1/2 turn for preload.
