The proper way to align your headlights would be to take it to a good shop where they have a device that fits onto the light that will set it perfectly level and straight . Most shops won't even charge you.
Most state inspection stations have alighment machines. you dont
Pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car. You'll find the procedure in it.
Most auto parts stores have a headlight alignment tool available for use, call beforehand
There should be two torx-head screws on each headlight--one on the top and one on the side. Park your truck on level ground about 4 feet from a wall. Turn on the low-beam headlights and adjust them so they are about level (up and down) and inline side to side with the headlights as the reference height. Mark the top and side of the 'brightest' parts of the light. Then turn on the brights and readjust so the bright parts roughly align with the marks.
The most precise way to align your headlights would be to have a shop that has a headlight aiming machine to do it. if that is not an option, pull your car up to a wall with your headlights on. make sure the car is on level ground. there are two adjustments on top, and slightly behind the lens of the headlight. one adjusts the light side to side, while the other adjusts it up and down. only do it this way if there is no other option,as it will not be very accurate.

On models 1996 onwards (this might also apply to earlier models), there are vertical and horizontal alignment screws on the front part of the engine compartment. The position of these alignment screws, and the associated water level indicators that you can use to align the headlights are illustrated in the Nissan Altima Owner's Manual, which can be downloaded for free from Nissan's website at: http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/deptog.asp?dept%5Fid=40

Hi, if you look in the owners manuel under the headlights area it will show you the very easy way to adjust your headlights. Briefly, you have to remove the black shroud in the front of and atop the radiator are first. Then if you look down at the top of the headlights you will notice adjusting screws that require Philips screw driver to turn. This will adjust the lights up and down. Do at dusk and mark a point in the light being reflected on a wall and you can determine which way you are adjusting the beam. This should be done on a fairly level surface.
there are screws on the left side for horizontal and right for the vertical you just adjust it the best time of the day doing it is when its dawn so you can see the screws and you can see what you are adjusting! goodluck!
