Keep the dot near the middle of the plate by putting your mouse cursor on the opposite side from where the dot is trying to go. If it moves past the edge, your pole has tipped over and you are out.

The key is not to keep it directly centered because when new items are added, they send the weight over to the side your cursor is already on. Keep the dot about halfway out to the far edge of the plate, and be ready to quickly slide over to the far side.
