You measure how high it needs to be and decide how high you want each step to be. 7 inches is a very common height for a step with the tread, the part you step on being 10 inches wide. You divide the height by the 7 inches or whatever height step you are using and this tells you how far the stairs will go into the room. You may have to adjust the height of the step some to make it come out even. The steps may be 6 and 5/8 inches instead of 7. Every staircase is different. Once you determine you step size and number, you use a framing square to lay out the step on a 2x12 long enough for the stairs. On the top edge of the 2x12 put the point of the square in the center of the 12 inches. Working from the left end of the 2x12, find 7 inches on the left angle of the square and 10 inches on the right hand side. Put these two marks on the edge of the 2x12 closest to you and mark the outside of the square. Move down the board and put the left hand 7 inch where the first 10 inch mark ended and mark the second step. Continue this down the length of the board. This will give you a series of angles down the board. Cut the 3 sided pieces out of the 2x12 and set it on edge. This will give you one side of the stairs. Depending on the width of the stair you may have one on each side and one in the middle. Cut the treads and the risers. Risers are the up and down pieces that your toe hit against. Nail the riser on first and then the tread. Work your way up one step at a time or you can nail all the risers on first. This will get you a very basic staircase. Even the grandest staircase starts with this and is built on from there.
It is harder to build a spiral Staircase because if you build a spiral staircase it will be longer and twistier than a straight staircase.

go to build mode and click the sledgehammer then click the staircase
