It wouldn't ever be 100% safe but by starting with smaller weights that you might find easy to build up muscular endurance and strength. Increasing slowly will mean that you reduce the risk while hypertrophy still occurs. Ensure you are doing everything, and that means absoloutely everything with correct technique, lifting with a straight back and not exceeding what you feel capable of.
