The sizing of cables or conductors is based on the amperage that the conductor can safely carry. The formula for amperage is I = W/E. Amps = 5000/Volts. With out a voltage stated an answer to this question can not be answered. When you calculate the amperage, re-ask your question for a conductor size for a given amperage.

∙ 10y agoWire is sized by the amperage that it carries. With out knowing the voltage of the generators output the amperage can not be calculated. When this is found us the following equation: Amps = kW x 1000/Volts x pf for single phase and Amps = kW x1000/1.73 x Volts x pf. I will presume the voltage is going to be high as a 1000 kW generator is the same as 1 million watts. Now if you meant 1000 watts then that is something different.
